The particular aircraft modeled is the personal airplane of Prince Karl Freidrich of Prussia. The Prince was Commanding Officer of a German reconnaissance squadron on the Western front in 1916.

For fun and sport, Prince Karl-Friedrch liked to fly missions with the figher Jasta assigned to the same airfield; thus, his choice of the new German fighter, the Albatros D-1.

Evidently, Prince Karl Freidrich was not much of a fighter pilot. He was shot down by a Leiutenant Pickthorn of the RFC, who was flying a much inferior De Haviland DH-2.

Prince Karl Friedrich survived being shot down, but died later while trying to escape from an Allied POW camp.
