The aircraft modeled is one which flew with No. 610 Squadron (County of Chester) during the early summer of 1940. No. 610 Squadron played an important role in covering the Dunkirk evacuation in June 1940, and the later convoy escorts through the English Channel. No 610 Squadron was withdrawn from the front lines just prior to the “official” beginnings of the Battle of Britain in August 1940.

The Mk. 1 version of the Spitfire was powered by an 1050 hp Rolls Royce Merlin engine, and was armed with eight Browning .303 machine guns, four per wing. Many RAF fighter pilots have described the Mk. 1 Spitfire as the most pleasant and pilot-friendly of the 25 of so Spitfire Marks built.
