Charles Wynns, Journeyman Modeler

Sopwith Snipe (1/72nd scale)

Sopwith Snipe

This is a Toko kit from Ukraine.

Relatively detailed cockpit – seat, stick, instrument panel. Wire rigged. Probably about 30 hours of work went into this model. Doped linen yellow undersides, olive drab topsides with light gray covering metal and wooden skinning. The colors used are fairly authentic to the time.

The plane modeled was flown by Major W. G. Barker of the RAF (Barker was Canadian).

During the final month of World War I, Barker made his name when he ended up taking on whole gaggles of Fokker D-VIIs, shooting down four D-VIIs and one German two-seat observation plane.

Barker was shot in both legs and one arm but managed to crash land behind British lines. His plane is evidently still preserved in Canada.
