The Reverend Jason Lee, came to Oregon in 1834 with his brother Daniel to found the Willamette Mission and the Indian Manual Training School. He lost two wives and an infant and had one surviving daughter. He was a persuasive speaker, dedicated to the missionary cause, and could extract $20 for support of the Mission from a group of mountain men with a single speech. His vision was key to the founding of Oregon, but he could not satisfy the Methodist Mission Board back East. | ![]() Rev. Jason Lee and wife Lucy |
Jason Lee and Lucy Thompson Lee, his second wife, occupied this apartment until her early death after childbirth. The child, Lucy Anna Maria, grew up and became a teacher at Willamette University. She was named for both of Lee's wives, and her portrait hangs on the right hand wall. This room is significant because it was also used for a meeting place to plan Oregon's Provisional Government, for the location of the first judiciary, a post office, and eventually as a store. | |
